Brief Summary of Unit:
Students will listen to, analyze, and describe the music of the Carnival of
the Animals. Students will also have a guided introduction into the
composer, Camille Saint Saens. Students will learn about various mediums
that produce sound for listening pleasure.
Students will Understand:
1. Will learn amazing facts about the composer Camille Saint Saens.
2. What program music is.
3. Learn about various mediums produce sound for listening pleasure.
4. They will see the relationship between instruments and the various
animals that are represented.
Essential Questions to Guide
this Unit and Focus Teaching and Learning:
1. What instrument plays the sound of a particular animal?
2. How does Camille Saint Saens help you understand which instrument plays
the part of the various animal sound?
3. Describe the mood of the music for various animals.
Key Knowledge and Skills
Students will Acquire:
1. Students will be able to name the instrument that corresponds with the
animal for the major four areas.
They are elephant, bird, lion, and aquarium.
2. Students will understand what program music is.
3. Students will be able to know the various mediums for producing listening
pleasure.
Assessment Plan:
1. Small Group Activity - Create lists of adjectives describing the various
animals being portrayed in the listening lesson.
2. Quiz students orally by having them identify the instrument and animal
sound it is portraying.
3. Ask students to write a short paragraph describing the sound of one the
Carnival of Animals. Adjective lists will be provided from their previous
lesson and also a list of animals and instruments will be provided.
Learning Activities:
1. Introduce students to the composer, Camille Saint Saens.
2. Listening Lesson, plus medium of performance about LP over Carnival of
the Animals
3. Show students pictures of the various instruments being played as they
listen.
4. Discuss how the music represents the different animals.
5. Show PowerPoint about the Carnival of the Animals.
6. Adjective small group activity - describe animals.
7. Writing assignment - Write a paragraph describing the sound of one of the
Carnival of the Animals. This will be done in the computer lab utilizing a
word document and insertion of a clip art picture related to the specific
animal.
Notes:
There is a site on-line that allows students to take a listening test over
the Carnival of Animals. You listen to small excerpts and then decide which
animal it portrays. Don't let the grade 9 scare you, my 3rd grader could do
